Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps approached us to develop their show branding—ultimately their show T-shirt—for their 2014 show, "Secret Society".
When the design team first approached us the starting point of the conversation was a show concept titled "Rites of Passage". Consistent with the brotherhood that Cavaliers has become over their nearly 50-year history, the show was going to take its inspiration from other secret societies—both real and mythologized—throughout history and literature. The most obvious of these being the Illuminati and the Knights Templar. Based on that brief, we immediate set out and started looking at source material related to the Illuminati.
Married a custom-made cryptology-inspired typeface and with The Cavaliers' own core symbology—the gears of the great machine—we think we landed on a particularly compelling solution. Fans of the drum corps must have agreed as the resulting T-shirt is reportedly the best-selling T-shirt in the corps' history.
